Abstract: Dr. Patricia Norton Workshop Description for the Kansas Library Association April 2010 The Librarian and the Struggling First Grade Reader While approximately 50% of first graders will be automatic readers, the rest of the class will struggle, to some degree, with learning to read. The challenge for librarians is to provide appropriate reading materials to the struggling reader. The overall objective of this presentation is to help librarians better guide selection of reading materials for struggling readers (and all first grade readers). In order to achieve this objective, the presentation will present “best practices” for printed reading material and a first grade reading curriculum. The presentation will present the following information: 1.Visual Considerations of the First Grader and printed reading material 2.A First Grade Reading Curriculum 3.Information on Reading Levels 4.Evaluation of popular “Easy Readers” The presentation, “The Librarian and the First Grade Struggling Reader” is for children's librarians and educators. Research from the fields of library science, optometry, and psychology under girds the contents of the presentation. Presentation will be in a power-point presentation. It will be both didactic and interactive. Depending on time allotment, hands-on experience will be used to facilitate the objectives of the presentation. Lecture attendees will benefit by increasing their knowledge of appropriate books for early and struggling first grade readers.
