Connecting with Fellow Librarians, Patrons, and the World: A Hands-on, Best Practices Preconference on Social Media Tools

No ticket required, regular session.

Description: Social media and networking is all the craze, but many librarians don't know where to jump in to have social media help them professionally and also help promote their library. This preconference session will give participants the tools and best practices to get the most out of social media. Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or a smartphone, but it is not required.

Length: 3hr

Room Number: 210A

Track Type: Digital Information and Technologies

Abstract: Librarians have started to use social media tools to connect with their peers around the state, the country, and the world. But many librarians are left behind for a variety of reasons. By exploring these reasons and offering solutions, we will discuss why social media should be used and how beneficial it can be for librarians and library patrons. An overview of social media will be provided with opportunities for hands-on experience with these tools. A panel of librarians from different library types (including public and academic libraries) will tell how they have successfully used social media to connect with their patrons, the community, and other librarians. Discussion will also include potential risks in using social media, ethical considerations, best practices, and related policies.
