Abstract: "Lincoln and the Ladies: The Question of Woman Suffrage" Abraham Lincoln’s law partner William Herndon stated that Lincoln believed in woman suffrage, but also believed the time for it had not yet come. While no direct evidence remains of Lincoln’s opinion, this does raise a question: what did Lincoln think of the women’s suffrage movement and of the women who were part of his political world? While no one can answer definitively whether Lincoln would have supported women’s suffrage had he lived, his views on natural law, politics and civil rights indicate that Lincoln might have eventually supported women’s rights. Presented by Dr. Janet Coryell, Western Michigan University, after the CULS Business Meeting and Luncheon. Budget and by-laws changes will be presented for approval in this semi-annual meeting.
